Kam Wah Cafe (金華冰廳)

According to the reviews that I had read, this place supposedly sells the best Pineapple Buns (菠蘿包) in Hong Kong! The other recommended items on the menu are Milk Tea, Egg Tarts and Chicken Wings.

We arrived here at about 10:50am on a Saturday morning and the place was packed but we still managed to get a table for two (i.e. didn’t need to share). However, it was basically a ledge against a partition with two stools (you can see part of this “partition” at the bottom left of the above picture – there wasn’t much legroom though).

Unlike most of the other Hong Kong style cafes which I’ve been to, this one requires every customer to have a minimum order of one drink!

Although it was already time for brunch, dining here was more like a late breakfast for us…


Pineapple Bun with Butter (得獎菠蘿油) – This was undoubtedly the best “bo lo yau” which I have tasted in Hong Kong to-date!! The slightly crunchy crust and the fragrance of the fluffy bun makes you feel tempted to order a second one… It’s difficult to tell how good it is from the picture and you’ll have to come and try it for yourself!!


French Toast (法蘭西多)
– This was nice, not too oily and cooked just right.


Egg Tarts (馳名酥皮蛋撻)
– Although the puff pastry egg tarts here are supposed to be famous, I still prefer the ones at Tai Cheong and Honolulu (but I do think these definitely taste better than the ones at Kam Fung).


Verdict: The pineapple buns at this place will be going into my MUST-EAT list when I visit Hong Kong again! Highly recommended!!

Getting There:
Take the MTR to Prince Edward (太子) and use exit B2 to get to street level (between Tung Choi St and Sai Yeung Choi St). Once you exit, make a U-turn by turning right and crossing over to the other side of the street, then walk straight ahead and turn left when you reach the Bute Street junction.
