Alt. Pizza, short for Alternative Pizza, is one of the latest pizza bars which opened in Singapore at end-June 2014 and serves artisanal pizzas and Californian craft beers. The pizzas here are 11-inch thin crust, made fresh daily and do not contain any preservatives. Customers have the option to fully customise their pizzas with a wide selection of ingredients which include gourmet meats and seafood, cheeses, homemade sauces, as well as fresh veggies and herbs.
Both indoor and outdoor seating is available.
The bright and snazzy decor catches your eye the moment you step in.
Look at the colourful pizza boxes at wall behind the cashier – very retro!
There is an open concept kitchen and their hip decor includes a colourful, one-of-a-kind mural by local artist Ben Qwek.
Look carefully and you can discover various familiar Asian and Singaporean icons in the mural!
Chef Matthew White (busy at work in the picture below), who helms this pizzeria, has previously worked with celebrity chefs Wolfgang Puck and Michael Mina. Singapore is now his long term home and he has lived here for 3 years already.
Looking around the restaurant, the weekly specials are displayed on the wall and we can see the oven just beneath.
I was fascinated by these beer taps!! I’m not much of a beer drinker but this place serves beers from Lost Coast Brewery, Modern Times Brewery and Magic Hat Brewing Company, all of which I have never heard of! We did later try Lost Coast’s Great White (the one with the shark and is a lighter ale – ABV 4.8%) and also the Tangerine Wheat Ale (middle tap, a refreshing citrus ale with natural tangerine flavours – ABV 5.5%). The former is a popular choice with most ladies but somehow I prefer the latter as it has a nicer and fuller flavour.
If you don’t fancy alcohol, a selection of interesting juices are available…
…and they even have some funky sodas which are made from organic ingredients!
My hubby tried the Karma Cola, which combines real cola nut from the rainforests of West Africa with natural spices; cinnamon, nutmeg and coriander with lemon, lime and orange oils, vanilla bean from Sri Lanka and organically grown and processed sugar cane from India. He seemed to enjoy it but I thought it tasted a little like cough mixture! LOL..
Now on to the food!
After you’ve scrutinised the menu, write your choices down on the order chit and hand it over to the waiter.
ARTICHOKE & SPINACH DIP ($10)
I personally am not a fan of artichokes and would never have imagined ordering this dish but since the chef personally recommended it, I decided to give it a try. Surprisingly it was good!! I couldn’t taste that distinct flavour which artichokes have but it was a flavourful dip (a tad salty) which went well with the sea salt flat bread.
BABY SPINACH SALAD ($10)
I don’t remember ever eating a full salad of raw spinach and it was quite a nice change from commonly found salads containing ingredients like lettuce, cabbage, tomatoes and rocket leaves. This salad comes with pecan almond crumble, goat cheese, dried cranberries, roasted squash and maple sherry vinaigrette. A good mixture of ingredients and it was delicious!
WAGYU SHORT RIB MEATBALLS ($12)
Yumm!! Meat lovers will love this! Think along the flavours of beef bolognese and you’ll get the idea, except this dish contains 3 cheeses (ricotta, provolone and mozzarella) and organic tomato sauce.
You can even order these tasty meatballs as a topping for your pizza!
Somewhere in the midst of the meal, I decided to try their chilli oil which is made in-house. Looks can be deceiving and it was extremely spicy!! Don’t be overly ambitious – just a dash of it would be enough on your food! ^_^
TRUFFLE SHUFFLE ($14)
This pizza is a combination of white sauce, parmesan, mozzarella, fennel sausage, roasted mushrooms, onions and white truffle oil. It’s one of the most popular pizzas here and I shan’t comment much as I’m biased when it comes to truffles – you’ll have to come try it for yourself!
One of the highlights at this restaurant is their D.I.Y. (design-it-yourself) pizza which gives customers the flexibility to be creative and come up with your idea of the perfect pizza! Prices start from $8 and there are about 39 ingredients which you can choose from, like roasted squash, pineapple, toasted pine nuts, smoked cheddar, chipotle chicken, blue crab, chorizo, smoked bacon and even littleneck clams!
This was my version – I think I may have gone overboard with my selection of ingredients (see picture above) but they were just too irresistable and I heard gasps of delight from the peeps at next table when my pizza arrived! What do you know – it turned out to have such vibrant colours!! You’ll never know whether a strange combination may taste nice until you try it – I thought my pizza choice was a well balanced meal as it contained both meat and veggies!
This next pizza was a different D.I.Y. pizza which had shaved prosciutto as the main ingredient.
KAPITI ORGANIC NEW ZEALAND ICE CREAM ($4 per scoop)
A perfect sweet ending to the meal!!

Verdict: I was impressed with the food! Everything from the appetizers to the pizzas tasted great!! I liked the idea of the D.I.Y. pizza and there were quite a number of families who dined here and the parents let their kids choose their own ingredients for their pizzas. The fact that the pizzas are thin crust means that you should be able to finish one 11-inch pizza by yourself without your stomach feeling as bloated as when you have a thick dough pizza. Of course if you dine with friends, you can order several different pizzas to share around so that you can sample a variety. Definitely a new favourite place for pizzas!
