Domino’s Cheese Burst Crust Pizzas

It has been almost 2 years since I attended my last pizza party at Domino’s and what do you know, it was my birthday and a coincidence that there was one being held that day! This was Migme‘s second #foodiemigup and a stark contrast in terms of food and venue when compared to the first event but it was a good opportunity to make new friends! 😀

Domino’s was introducing its new range of Cheese Burst Crust pizzas and a group of us got to try the various flavours!

Customers can try the all-new Chilli Cheese Burst Crust, as well as BBQ Cheese Burst Crust. Those who love spicy stuff will probably want to try the Chilli Cheese Burst Crust which features crushed red chillies sprinkled over a layer of creamy cheddar cheese sauce sandwiched between two crispy thin crusts. For those who prefer a smoky flavour, the BBQ Cheese Burst Crust offers BBQ sauce drizzled over creamy cheddar cheese sauce and this combination emphasizes its full-flavoured and smoky texture together with a rich tomato twist that creates an explosion of sweet and tanginess alongside the chosen pizza topping.

According to Linda Hassan, Senior Manager of Marketing at Domino’s Pizza Singapore and Malaysia, actual food is used in their product shoots – i.e. what you see in the pictures is what the customers will actually get! No gimmicks!!

You can mix and match the pizzas with the various cheese burst crust flavours and although there are some recommended combinations, you can unleash your creativity (and adventurous stomach for it!) to come up with your own combination.

These were some of the combinations which we tried…

Classic Pepperoni BBQ Cheese Burst Crust Pizza

Alfredo Prawn Original Cheese Burst Pizza

The Big BBQ, BBQ Cheese Burst Crust Pizza

We also did try the Hawaiian Paradise Chilli Cheese Burst Crust Pizza (which had chilli flakes sandwiched in-between but somehow I didn’t find it to be spicy) and the Chilli Chicken Chilli Cheese Burst Crust Pizza with salsa as its base sauce. By then I was too hungry and let my stomach take over, thus no pictures to show for these two pizzas. :p

For those of you who want to try the Cheese Burst Crust Pizzas but are unsure of which combination to try, here are some of the Chef’s Recommendations:

  • Chilli Cheese Burst Crust:  Best with Hawaiian Paradise, Chilli Chicken and Very Veggie
  • BBQ Cheese Burst Crust:  Best with Classic Pepperoni, The Big BBQ and Classy Chic
  • Original Cheese Burst Crust:  Best with Meatasaurus, Ultimate Hawaiian and Classified Chicken

My favourite was the Classic Pepperoni BBQ Cheese Burst Crust as the combination of the cheese and the smoky flavour of the BBQ sauce went well together with the pepperoni.

Besides the food, there were some games which we were grudgingly pulled into playing and most people were asking if we could skip them and just focus on the food but it fell on deaf ears! Good thing I didn’t let on that it was my birthday else I don’t know what else may have happened! LOL!!…

We were split into two teams and one of the games which garnered the most laughter was the jingle competition, whereby we were given 3 minutes to come up with a jingle for the Cheese Burst Crust Pizzas!

This was the first group (our competitor)…

Next was our turn and here was our cheesy rendition! (Gosh…the things I do on my birthday!…)

Anyway, we all had fun and won prizes (more pizzas!) from the games that each of the teams won.

Alt. Pizza at Suntec City

Alt. Pizza, short for Alternative Pizza, is one of the latest pizza bars which opened in Singapore at end-June 2014 and serves artisanal pizzas and Californian craft beers. The pizzas here are 11-inch thin crust, made fresh daily and do not contain any preservatives. Customers have the option to fully customise their pizzas with a wide selection of ingredients which include gourmet meats and seafood, cheeses, homemade sauces, as well as fresh veggies and herbs.

Both indoor and outdoor seating is available.

The bright and snazzy decor catches your eye the moment you step in.

Look at the colourful pizza boxes at wall behind the cashier – very retro!

There is an open concept kitchen and their hip decor includes a colourful, one-of-a-kind mural by local artist Ben Qwek.

Look carefully and you can discover various familiar Asian and Singaporean icons in the mural!

Chef Matthew White (busy at work in the picture below), who helms this pizzeria, has previously worked with celebrity chefs Wolfgang Puck and Michael Mina. Singapore is now his long term home and he has lived here for 3 years already.

Looking around the restaurant, the weekly specials are displayed on the wall and we can see the oven just beneath.

I was fascinated by these beer taps!!  I’m not much of a beer drinker but this place serves beers from Lost Coast Brewery, Modern Times Brewery and Magic Hat Brewing Company, all of which I have never heard of!  We did later try Lost Coast’s Great White (the one with the shark and is a lighter ale – ABV 4.8%) and also the Tangerine Wheat Ale (middle tap, a refreshing citrus ale with natural tangerine flavours – ABV 5.5%). The former is a popular choice with most ladies but somehow I prefer the latter as it has a nicer and fuller flavour.

If you don’t fancy alcohol, a selection of interesting juices are available…

…and they even have some funky sodas which are made from organic ingredients!

My hubby tried the Karma Cola, which combines real cola nut from the rainforests of West Africa with natural spices; cinnamon, nutmeg and coriander with lemon, lime and orange oils, vanilla bean from Sri Lanka and organically grown and processed sugar cane from India. He seemed to enjoy it but I thought it tasted a little like cough mixture! LOL..

Now on to the food!

After you’ve scrutinised the menu, write your choices down on the order chit and hand it over to the waiter.

I personally am not a fan of artichokes and would never have imagined ordering this dish but since the chef personally recommended it, I decided to give it a try. Surprisingly it was good!! I couldn’t taste that distinct flavour which artichokes have but it was a flavourful dip (a tad salty) which went well with the sea salt flat bread.

I don’t remember ever eating a full salad of raw spinach and it was quite a nice change from commonly found salads containing ingredients like lettuce, cabbage, tomatoes and rocket leaves. This salad comes with pecan almond crumble, goat cheese, dried cranberries, roasted squash and maple sherry vinaigrette. A good mixture of ingredients and it was delicious!

Yumm!! Meat lovers will love this! Think along the flavours of beef bolognese and you’ll get the idea, except this dish contains 3 cheeses (ricotta, provolone and mozzarella) and organic tomato sauce.

You can even order these tasty meatballs as a topping for your pizza!

Somewhere in the midst of the meal, I decided to try their chilli oil which is made in-house. Looks can be deceiving and it was extremely spicy!! Don’t be overly ambitious – just a dash of it would be enough on your food! ^_^

This pizza is a combination of white sauce, parmesan, mozzarella, fennel sausage, roasted mushrooms, onions and white truffle oil. It’s one of the most popular pizzas here and I shan’t comment much as I’m biased when it comes to truffles – you’ll have to come try it for yourself!

One of the highlights at this restaurant is their D.I.Y. (design-it-yourself) pizza which gives customers the flexibility to be creative and come up with your idea of the perfect pizza! Prices start from $8 and there are about 39 ingredients which you can choose from, like roasted squash, pineapple, toasted pine nuts, smoked cheddar, chipotle chicken, blue crab, chorizo, smoked bacon and even littleneck clams!

This was my version – I think I may have gone overboard with my selection of ingredients (see picture above) but they were just too irresistable and I heard gasps of delight from the peeps at next table when my pizza arrived! What do you know – it turned out to have such vibrant colours!!  You’ll never know whether a strange combination may taste nice until you try it – I thought my pizza choice was a well balanced meal as it contained both meat and veggies!

This next pizza was a different D.I.Y. pizza which had shaved prosciutto as the main ingredient.

A perfect sweet ending to the meal!!
Clockwise from top: Double Cookies & Cream, Hokey Pokey (vanilla ice cream with bits of honeycomb), Chocolate Hazelnut.

Verdict:  I was impressed with the food! Everything from the appetizers to the pizzas tasted great!! I liked the idea of the D.I.Y. pizza and there were quite a number of families who dined here and the parents let their kids choose their own ingredients for their pizzas. The fact that the pizzas are thin crust means that you should be able to finish one 11-inch pizza by yourself without your stomach feeling as bloated as when you have a thick dough pizza. Of course if you dine with friends, you can order several different pizzas to share around so that you can sample a variety. Definitely a new favourite place for pizzas!

Domino’s Pizza – Double Value Deal and more!…

I was invited to a food tasting session at Domino’s Pizza and at the same time learned a bit more about their services and operations.

There is a Double Deal promotion which is available from 25th January to 3rd March 2013 and features two of their most popular pizzas – Classic Pepperoni (with 50% extra beef pepperoni slices added) and Hawaiian Paradise (with 50% extra smoked chicken breast added). Besides these two pizzas, cheese lovers can order the Simply Cheese pizza (with 50% extra cheese added) as part of this promotion. All the extra toppings mentioned are included at no extra cost.

Domino’s is the only fast food with a chef and some of their gourmet recipes created can be found in their signature flatbreads. We were informed that the top three bestsellers in their range of flatbreads are as follows:
1) BBQ Beef
2) Chicken Alfredo
3) Spinach and Feta

A demonstration was then given on how to place an order using the Domino’s iPhone application (more details on this are mentioned later) and our food was soon delivered by this friendly pizza delivery guy who seemed a little camera shy…

More food soon arrived…

Classified Chicken – Smoked Chicken Breast, Onions, Mushrooms
At first glance, I really didn’t know what to expect from this pizza but after I took my first bite, I fell in love with it! If you like cheese or dairy stuff you might enjoy this. It had a lovely creamy texture and was very fragrant.

Chilli Chicken – Smoked Chicken Breast, Onions, Red Peppers, Chilli Flakes
It was a little bit spicy but somehow this pizza wasn’t to my liking…

Simply Cheese with Crunchy Thin Crust – 100% Mozzarella Cheese, Parmesan Cheese & Oregano
One for the vegetarians. A simple pizza with cheese and tomato paste and I thought the overall combination was quite nice.

Hawaiian Paradise with New York Crust – 100% Mozzarella Cheese with Succulent Smoked Chicken Breast, Chicken Ham and Juicy Pineapples
I like Hawaiian pizzas so was quite happy to see this!

Hawaiian Paradise with Crunchy Thin Crust – I think I like this thin crust version better. I will definitely order this again.

Classic Pepperoni – this is a meat lover’s delight and was one of my favourites!

Add-ons like Garlic Cheese Onion Rings, Crazy Chicken Crunchies and Golden Roasted Drummets are delicious and make good complements to the pizza meal.

When the meal was almost over, we were served with this little box which contained our dessert!

Two types of dessert are available at Domino’s. The warm Chocolate Lava Cake is brimming with melted chocolate on the inside, which will ooze out when you cut into it. It was yummy but I personally felt it was a little too sweet and would have been perfect if it was topped with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream! The Caramel Sticky Dessert to my surprise wasn’t as sweet as the lava cake and I kind of enjoyed this although I’m not really a caramel lover.

For pizza delivery in Singapore, you can call 62226333 or order online at Delivery is free, prices are nett and there is a 30min delivery guarantee else you will be compensated with a free Regular Pizza voucher redeemable on your next purchase.

Besides ordering online or by phone, Domino’s has an iPhone application which can be used to place your orders and the app also has a store locator feature which shows you where their outlets are if you decide to dine-in instead of having your pizza delivered.

One thing to note is that you need to be a registered user. If you already have a login userid and password, the time taken to order a pizza can be as quick as 1 min 16 secs! Each person can register up to 3 phone numbers and 5 delivery addresses (these details can be added or deleted whenever you like).

Great news for iPhone users – Domino’s gives a FREE item with every order placed using their iPhone app. To reveal what your free item is, all you have to do is to shake your phone during the last stages of the ordering process. Too bad I don’t own an iPhone…

Did you know that you can order your pizza up to 7 days in advance? I love the fact that they provide this service as it is especially useful when you are planning for a party or perhaps want to order in during the festive seasons.

One value-added feature which I like is that you can use the “GPS Tracker” (which stands for “Great Pizza Service Tracker”) to check the status of your order. Just access the iPhone app or go online (login required) and click on “GPS Tracker” to retrieve your order details – this will show you whether your pizza is being baked, packed or being delivered. Basically it tracks every stage that the pizza goes through before it arrives at your doorstep – it’s like you are “stalking” your pizza!

If the “DELIVERING” icon on the “GPS Tracker” is highlighted in red, you can standby at the door with your money as the pizza should be at your doorstep soon.

In the event that you are busy and a friend or family member wants to check on the order status (i.e. the person checking isn’t the person who placed the order), they can do so by using the “GPS tracker” and keying in the phone number of the person who had placed the order.

Basically their KPIs for the entire pizza delivery process are 12min in the kitchen and 15min for delivery.

All pizzas are freshly made from scratch once the orders are received. Skillful pizza makers in the kitchen can make pizzas in 1-2min, then the pizzas are baked in the oven for 6min so the total time taken is about 9min.

I went on a brief tour of the kitchen and found they have a humongous state-of-the-art oven which costs as much as a car! A grill with a conveyor belt type contraption will take the uncooked pizzas in at one end and output the cooked pizzas at the other end. Baking is a pre-programmed step which takes a fixed duration of 6min. The oven is set to bake at 470 degrees and takes 30-45min to warm up. Baking cannot commence until this temperature is met. They usually start pre-heating the oven at 9am so that the oven can reach the ideal temperature before it is opened for business at 10:30am. We weren’t allowed to take photos in the kitchen so I can’t show you any pictures of the oven.

For those who prefer to walk-in and do takeaway, there is a TV screen in the store for customers to track the status of their orders. There is a 15min takeout guarantee and if this is not met, you will be given a free Personal Pizza voucher which is redeemable on your next purchase.

Overall, I had a great time and was stuffed from all that pizza! Thanks to for the invite and Domino’s Pizza for the food tasting!!
